What to put on an ABN invoice
- Your business name and ABN (customers can withhold tax from businesses that don't quote an ABN)
- An invoice number and the date
- Who you are billing
- A description of each item or job, the quantity and the price
- The total, and the GST if you are registered and the item is taxable
- How to pay you: account name, BSB, account number and due date
Not registered for GST?
If you are not registered for GST you don't charge it, so you send an invoice rather than a tax invoice. Show your ABN and the total; many sole traders add “No GST has been charged” so the customer doesn't look for a GST amount. You must register once your GST turnover reaches $75,000 a year.
Registered for GST?
Your invoice needs the extra details of a tax invoice: the words “Tax invoice”, the GST amount and which items are taxable. See tax invoice requirements in Australia.
Questions
Can I invoice without an ABN?
You can, but a business customer may then have to withhold tax from the payment. Getting an ABN is free on the Australian Business Register.
Is my data stored?
No. The PDF is made in your browser. Only your own business details can be remembered, in this browser, if you tick the box.
Do NDIS support workers use this template?
Use the NDIS invoice generator instead: it adds the participant's NDIS number, support item numbers and price-limit checks.
